Assemblages/Sculptures

Walking through the woods, I see things that interest me, like the bark of a fallen birch tree. A shell filled with holes from bugs and its rotting branches being absorbed back into the soil. I build these bits of nature into my pieces. These assemblages expand on Rauschenberg's “Combines” but I take it in a new direction. The found pieces address order, chaos, and man's attempt to control nature. The parts and pieces taken from the landscape now become landscapes or still-life paintings.

These bits of nature are now formalized and gridded off the way they should be. Not haphazard, but ordered, and aesthetically pleasing. If you arrange things in a certain way, they almost look natural. They address order, chaos, and man’s attempt to control nature. Broken nature is all around us!
